Place of Nations (Geneva) Subject: Persecution of the Baha'i Community
Geneva—23 May 2013—Yesterday the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights issued a series of pointed recommendations to the Iranian government – recommendations that included a plea for Iran to ensure that all citizens, regardless of religious belief, enjoy full rights without any discrimination.
The Committee specifically referred to the Baha'i community, expressing its concern that Iranian Baha'is face "widespread and entrenched discrimination, including denial of access to employment in the public sector, institutions of higher education, as well as to benefits of the pension system." Geneva—13 May 2013—Four high-level United Nations human rights experts today called on Iran to immediately release the seven imprisoned Baha'i leaders.
In a press release issued on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the arrest of the seven, the four experts emphasized that the seven are held solely because of their religious beliefs, that their continued imprisonment is unjust and wrongful, and that Iran's treatment of religious minorities violates international law.

New York—7 May 2013—To mark the five year anniversary of the wrongful imprisonment of the seven Iranian Baha’i leaders, the Baha’i International Community is today launching a campaign to call for their immediate release – and to draw attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran.
“On 14 May, the seven innocent Baha’i leaders will have been behind bars for five full years, unjustly imprisoned solely because of their religious beliefs,” said Bani Dugal, the principal representative of the Baha'i International Community to the United Nations.

Subject: Social and Sustainable Development
New York—3 May 2013—As part of its ongoing involvement at the United Nations, the Baha'i International Community's United Nations Office participated in this year's Commission on Population and Development. The 46th such Commission, held from 22-26 April, focused on "New trends in migration: demographic aspects." One of our delegates to this Commission, Mr. Geoffrey Cameron, took the time to discuss issues, such as trends in migration, the intersection between migration and development, as well as the benefits of re-framing the migration discourse. |
