Habitat II

The Baha'i International Community participated in the World Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II) in Istanbul, Turkey; the Turkish Bahá'í community sponsored a campaign to promote the concept of world citizenship; BIC addresses conference plenary with the statement Sustainable Communities in an Integrating World. The BIC was heavily engaged in the preparations for the UN Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II).  Baha'i representatives attended and participated in numerous caucuses, many of which adopted text suggested by Bahá'ís during their deliberations; the office also sponsored several cultural events and saw the Conference as a fitting venue to discuss ways in which humanity can build prosperous, just and united communities. They also distributed statements and other material to government delegations, journalists, NGOs and individuals. During the conference, the BIC prepared a paper entitled Sustainable Communities in an Integrating World. The parallel NGO Forum had a Baha'i participation of over 150 Bahá'ís, Bahá'í institutions organized workshops and symposia and individuals engaged with major groups.
