In preparation for the International Year of Peace (1986), the governing body of the Baha'i Faith releases a statement,  "The Promise of World Peace" . The statement is formally presented to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Javier Perez de Cuellar, on behalf of the worldwide Baha'i community as well as to some 200 heads of state and high-ranking officials. By 1989, the statement had been translated into 76 languages.
