On 23 March 2018, Mr. Abdel-Malek Al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthis in Yemen, gave a speech aimed at rallying Yemenis against foreign powers and ideologies. In it, he explicitly attacked the Yemeni Baha'i community, deriding the Baha'i movement as “satanic” and falsely claiming it is “waging a war of doctrine” against Islam.
Mr. Al-Houthi' s rhetoric was reminiscent of statements made against Baha’is by Iranian religious leaders, further suggesting the involvement of Iran in Yemen in the recent attacks on Baha’is.
As documented in the following articles in the Arab news media, Mr. Al-Houthi also falsely described Baha’is as deniers of Islam. He spread other falsehoods about the relationship between the Bahá'í Faith and Israel and Western countries. He urged Yemenis to defend their country against Baha’is and members of other religious minorities under the pretext that “those who destroy the faith in people are no less evil and dangerous than those who kill people with their bombs.”
