Call for a new development paradigm at 11th breakfast dialogue

New York—14 June 2013

The eleventh in an ongoing series of informal breakfast dialogues co-convened by the Baha'i International Community and International Movement ATD Fourth World focused on achieving coherence in the UN system for achieving sustainable development. Opening remarks were delivered by H.E. Ms. Anne Anderson, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Mission of Ireland to the UN, and Mr. Nikhil Seth, Director of DESA’s Division for Sustainable Development. Highlights of the discussion include an examination on the work of the Open Working Group to date, its strengths and challenges. The disconnect between the UN system and dynamics at the grassroots level was discussed; concern was voiced over the inadequacy of the entrenched North-South framing of development discourse and policy-making; and the lack of civil society access to discourses at the UN. Participants called for a new paradigm: development is a process that involves all member states, not simply a matter of resource transfer and striving to emulate industrialized nations. To move forward, participants noted the need for the establishment of genuine partnerships based on a common vision and mutual help and the need for multi-sectoral approaches that can give rise to and implement a coherent development framework. [View programme and informal notes.]
