Over 100 people gathered to mark the re-dedication of the “Peace Monument,” which contains soil brought from nearly 150 countries and is a symbolic representation of the oneness of humanity and the global cooperation needed to achieve lasting peace. The monument was built by the Baha’i International Community and the Baha'i Community of Brazil in 1992 for the 1992 Earth Summit. 

UN Secretary-General for Rio+20, Mr. Sha Zukang and Rio de Janeiro mayor, Mr. Eduardo Paes plant a Brazil Wood tree at the site.

Among those attending the re-dedication were UN Secretary-General for Rio+20, Mr. Sha Zukang, Rio de Janeiro mayor, Mr. Eduardo Paes, the sculptor of the Monument—renowned Brazilian artist Mr. Siron Franco, Minister Laudemar Aguiar, Secretary for Conservation and Public Services,  Charles Osorio as well as representatives of the Baha'i International Community and the Baha'i Community of Brazil. The Mayor and the Secretary-General planted a Brazil Wood tree at the site.

Etched in four languages on the four sides of the upper pyramid is a quote from the Baha’i Scriptures: "The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens." The quote is displayed in English, Portuguese, Chinese and Terena, an indigenous language of Brazil.
