The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution calling on Iran to end its ongoing human rights violations.

The General Assembly voiced its call by approving the final resolution at the plenary, which passed with a vote of 81 to 30, with 70 abstentions. The draft resolution was first approved by the Third Committee of the General Assembly on 14 November 2019.

The resolution calls on the Iranian government to “eliminate, in law and practice, all forms of discrimination on the basis of thought, conscience, religion or belief,...including against persons belonging to recognized and unrecognized religious minorities…”.  

The resolution also expresses “serious concern about ongoing severe limitations and increasing restrictions on the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion or belief, … against persons belonging to recognized and unrecognized religious minorities, including ... members of the Baha’i faith”. 

Forty-five Member States co-sponsored the resolution which was led by Canada.
